While searching for wood grain textures yesterday, I found Alex Buga’s website. Yes, it does have a great wood texture in the background, but I saved his site to highlight other features that I like about it.
- As noted before, I like it when sites include hand drawn elements. Alex’s site does this very well with the character sketch and introduction. I also like the fluffy little clouds scattered here and there. The footer also incorporates more hand drawn elements.
- I also like his choice of colors.
- The pendant light is cool. I really like the way it “lights” up his comments section. Very clever idea.
- Navigation menu. Simple and not overloaded with too many choices. I don’t necessarily like the “skip to content” feature as it doesn’t really accomplish much (I can scroll down an inch and a half just as easily as I can hit that button). But, this does not take away from the nice, simple navigation menu he’s created.
So, check out his site and let me know what you think of it. I think it’s great!

Wood look anyone? This website that belongs to Komodomedia has really nice wood theme going. It gives a warm cartoony feel. The navigation bar, the nice wood seal, the heading bars, all in wood. I also like the foliage that they have hanging here and there. Good illustration work.

Here’s a nice little illustration I found this morning. Floral, colorful, clean. If you take a look at the page, it fits in nicely into the overall design.

First, happy 4th of July to all. Hope you are having, or had, a good one.
For the occasion I want to take a look at our presidential candidates’ website designs. Just to compare the design for fun.
I went and looked at McCain’s (R), Obama’s (D) and Barr’s (L) websites, these seem to be the top 3 candidates at this time. I want to say right away that I am not representing any of the candidates and am not promoting any one of them here. This is simply a look at their website design.
Here is the first impressions, this is John McCain’s website:

And here’s Barack Obama’s:

And this one is Bob Barr’s:

Right away, Barack Obama’s website stands out, the design is beautiful. The first impression is obviously pleasant to look at. If you continue to the main page of Obama’s website you will see that the entire website is done with the same beautiful design and style. Airy, light blues and whites, hints of reds and greens here and there.

The graphics on his website are worth looking at too, here is a few I took screenshots of:

Like I said before, I am not promoting Barack Obama for President here, I am highlighting the skills and talents of the website designers that created his website.
I did some digging around and according to this article, the designed of the logo is SENDER and SimpleScott designed the website.
I really wanted to post some screen shots from McCain’s and Barr’s websites but, honestly, there was really nothing to show. Pretty disapointing.
Anyway, hope you anjoyed this post. I’d love some comments, guys and girls. I’ve been getting loads and loads of SPAM comments but very few real ones. I’d love to hear from the readers. Tell me something.

Another excellent example of great design, over at SMC Design. The whole header and the logo both look awesome. Real elements together with digital illustrations were used in this composition that were tastefully brought together to make this impressive website design. I love the gray navigation with the withered away lettering and the stamped logo on a piece of cloth. I should also point out how the page pops thanks to the container design with the rounded corners, very good use of shadows and background colors and designs.

Really nice header over here. I like the slight pattern in the center of the header up at the top and the blue tones work well. The prize winner on this website though is the site navigation, take a look. Looks simple and ordinary at first but if you hover your mouse over the navigation links the box surrounding the wording will glide over to the link you are hovering over, plus it adjusts the width on the fly to accommodate the size of the wording in the link. Very clever.

I stumbled across Truebluetitan.com today and thought it deserved mention. I like several things about this site’s layout and design:
1. Color combination. I like the dark brown and silvers that are on the page. I also like the texture of the brown. It has a leather like quality to it. Er, wait…is that naugahyde? Whether it’s leather, naugahyde, or pleather, it’s a nice look.
2. I like the logo alot too. It’s a titan…no getting around it. It’s also got a crest like style and aviation type theme to it, which sets it apart as well.
3. Very simple navigation. 3 tabs…perfect. Simplistic, yet comprehensive in scope.
I think there are some simple points in this design that can lend itself to creativity and ’spark’ for new designs when they come up with new clients. Check it out and let me know what you think of the site too.

This is a part 2 of a 3 part entry. BitsAndPix.de has many excellent elements on the site and I want to file three of the best ones here for future inspiration.

The second great element is the way text and the header area is treated. Strong white text with a 1 pixel black or maybe just a darker color outline makes the text pop from the page. I like the background graphic, it’s not just green but the illustration of a city, the sun, birds and the gently faded pattern ballances out the header. I also want to mention the small detail - birds outside of the header border flying in. Adds to the uniqueness fo the site.
Part 1 - Fun logo
Part 3 - Image effects

This guy, Matthew is the owner of the website design portfolio and blog at 0at.org, that’s zero-not-an-o-at.org. I’ve known this guy for a long time from seoMOZ.org, he used to do a lot of web design, programming and blog posting there (I’m a regular reader over there). I’ve never actually seen any of his other work and recently I found his blog where he has his past work posted. It is amazing! It’s not just the design, it’s the talent, you can see it. Lots of color and contrast, Web 2.0 ‘ish. You’ll just have to go look at it yourself. Here is a clip of his Portfolio:

You really got to see the actual images to appreciate. We all can learn a thing or two from this work. It’s been inspiring for me. He uses Macromedia Fireworks to illustrate his art.
Here is my favorite design from his portfolio:

This was a design for his blog that he later redesigned to what it is now.
Enjoy.

Great color scheme website, the blog is full of different color schemes that you can pick from. The website it self is an inspiration. It’s clean, airy even. I think it’s the combination of white, green and blue together that gives me the airy or free feeling. Simple logo, nice boxy navigation buttons, the color boxes in the right sidebar. Very nicely done.
