Have I said before how much I enjoy earth tones? Ha…just kidding, of course I’ve said it once, or twice…maybe three times. Well, it’s true.
The Bright Creative website is wonderful. I look at it and I just say, “ahh…that’s so nice.” Warm color combinations, smooth transitions, classy background textures all make it pleasing to my eyes. There isn’t anything harsh or abrupt about the design anywhere. Everything is subtle and smooth. Thank you Dave Shea for making such a great looking website. I appreciate it!

As I’ve said in previous posts, I like earthy colors. Browns, greens, subtle blues are great in my opinion. However, those colors aren’t always the best choices for grabbing people’s attention on the Internet. Bright colors done correctly are the best choices. The key words in that last sentence are “done correctly.” Shocking, harsh, pupil-killing methods are not what I’m referring to here when I say “done correctly.” You can use bright colors in a way that doesn’t melt the viewer’s retinas.
A good example is Fold-Your-Shirt.com. I wanted to feature this site for two reasons:
1. Its “done correctly” usage of bright colors.
2. Has anyone tried to fold their shirt this way?!?! I want to know! I haven’t tried it yet. I know that when I start trying this, I won’t stop until I’m successful. So, I want to know if anyone else has succeeded first!
Their use of the two different colors of green isn’t overwhelming. It’s attention grabbing, yes. But, it isn’t overdone. Again, this is coming from a guy who likes earth tones, so for me to say they used bright colors well truly is a compliment (in my humble opinion).
Any thoughts on how to properly use bright colors in a website design? Do you have any examples of someone using bright colors in a very bad way? Send the links to us! We’d like to check them out (as long as I’m wearing my polarized Ray Bans!).

What was your favorite Crayola crayon color when you were a kid? Are you still a Crayola fan? If so, well, here’s the color resource for you! We have referenced COLOURlovers site in the past and are doing so again. This COLOURlovers article contains information about all 120 Crayola colors. Along with containing some interesting facts about Crayola crayons, it also contains the Hex codes and RGB values for each color as well. This is a good chart to remember when needing to come up with some good, quality colors for future design work.

Very nice combination of colors on this site. Them being a web design provider, sure shows their talent off on their own design. I like the logo - how they worked a pixelated tree into it, looks very good and clean. The font used also works well with this design.

If you look at the rest of the site design you will notice it is well balanced, colors, white (gray) space, layout. It all works very nicely together.

This guy, Matthew is the owner of the website design portfolio and blog at 0at.org, that’s zero-not-an-o-at.org. I’ve known this guy for a long time from seoMOZ.org, he used to do a lot of web design, programming and blog posting there (I’m a regular reader over there). I’ve never actually seen any of his other work and recently I found his blog where he has his past work posted. It is amazing! It’s not just the design, it’s the talent, you can see it. Lots of color and contrast, Web 2.0 ‘ish. You’ll just have to go look at it yourself. Here is a clip of his Portfolio:

You really got to see the actual images to appreciate. We all can learn a thing or two from this work. It’s been inspiring for me. He uses Macromedia Fireworks to illustrate his art.
Here is my favorite design from his portfolio:

This was a design for his blog that he later redesigned to what it is now.
Enjoy.

Great color scheme website, the blog is full of different color schemes that you can pick from. The website it self is an inspiration. It’s clean, airy even. I think it’s the combination of white, green and blue together that gives me the airy or free feeling. Simple logo, nice boxy navigation buttons, the color boxes in the right sidebar. Very nicely done.

The source site for this is: http://wellstyled.com

This is a great tool. I know I will use it next time I am developing a design for a new site. This tool allows you to select your main color and it will suggest and display a variety of color schemes that you can use. You will have a choice of pastel scheme version for your color, a dark pastel, contrast and a few more. This is definitely a tool that every web designer should have it his tool box.
