How Do You Bill Your Clients? Hourly Rate or Flat Fee?

I’m hoping to create a good discussion topic with this one. How do you bill clients for your work? Here’s the criteria for discussion of this topic:

1. New Customer: This is a customer that you are interested in developing a long term working relationship with. On the first project for them…do you give them a flat fee for the project or a quote based up x hours for $x per hour?

2. Regular Customers: How do you bill out for your services with your regular customers? New project. Recurring work. Upgrades. What influences the way you bill them?

3. One time jobs: I don’t really ever like to think of doing one time jobs. However, if/when you do them, how do you charge for it?

Again, this is really just for ’round table discussion.’ I want to just read what your thoughts are behind these scenarios. Let me know, I’d truly appreciate your input. Hopefully in contributing your thoughts on this topic, we will be able to build up a good resource for web designers everywhere to assist them in building their own fee for services criteria.

Thanks!
